Dilchad was founded in 1962 by the Choudhury family, who are pillars of the local Bengali community in the East End of London to this day. Serving staple Bengali dishes this very building was a home for students, factory workers and even politicians, who would come together under our roof for a ‘taste and aroma of home’.
Over the years, Dilchad paved the way for Indian restaurants up and down the country to serve what is now associated with a traditional ‘curry house’.
Today, our menu pays homage to the flavours of the whole of Southeast Asia, a region that was a crossroads for Persian scholars, Afghan traders, Arab adventurers and British rulers. And now we are innovating with these ingredients to bring out the flavous of now and those of the future for your pleasure.
This is the taste of Dilchad, food cooked with love.
Dilchad is located in a historic listed building in the once narrow alley near Spitalfields Market and stones throw from the City of London. Our street is thought to be named after a gate which formerly stood here, known as Whitegate Alley.
Today, we see our street thriving with businesses opened around us adding to the growing community in the City who call Dilchad their local, including a very large contingent of global travellers who happen upon our door now every day.
